Khajuraho Temples Historical Facts and Pictures

Khajuraho refers to the group of monuments, one of the most visited tourist destinations, located in the town of Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, India. The place boasts of the largest number of medieval Hindu temples and Jain temples, all famous for their erotic art and sculpture. The group of temples in Khajuraho is counted among the “seven wonders” of the country while it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monuments were built by the Chandela rulers between the years of 950 and 1050. The sculptures served to teach boys living in hermitages during brahmacharya about the world and worldly desires.

The temples were first brought to the attention of the British during late 19th century with General Alexander Cunningham being the first person to bring the place in the limelight after exploring the site for the Archaeological Survey of India. Since then, Khajuraho has been regarded as an international tourist hunt, attracting art lovers from all over the world.
