Bedse Caves Historical Facts and Pictures

Bedse Caves or Bedsa Caves, located in the Maval taluka in Pune, India, is one of the oldest Buddhist caves of the State of Maharashtra. Built over 2,000 years ago by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, Bedse is the least known one among the three Buddhist caves in Pune, the other two being the Karla and Bhaja Caves. The caves were maintained and regularly painted by local authorities until around 1861, to please the British officers who visited the place. This has led to the loss of many wall paintings and inscriptions.

There are two main caves, the prayer hall or chaitya with a comparatively large stupa and the monastery or Vihara. Both caves have rich architectural value with stone carvings and artwork. The Vihara originally consisted of multiple small cells that served as the dwelling places of Buddhist monks in ancient times.
