Mysore Palace Historical Facts and Pictures

The Mysore Palace, also known as the Amba Vilas Palace, located in Mysore in the state of Karnataka in southern India, is one of the most visited historical places in the country with over 2.7 million visitors each year. The palace was first built in the 14th century by the then-ruler of the Wadiyar (Wodeyar) Dynasty, still being the official residence of the living descendants of the family. The Wadiyars ruled the native state of Mysore between the years of 1399 and 1947, during which period the Mysore Palace was built and rebuilt many times. The construction of the present palace began in 1897 when Lord Henry Irwin, the renowned British architect, was entrusted by Her Royal Majesty Maharani Vani Vilas Sannidhna and her son His Highness Rajarshi Sri Sir. Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV with the task of designing a new palace after the old one was accidentally burned down. The construction of the present Mysore Palace was completed in 1912.
